Tripura
Tripura, a tiny State with 10,486 sq. kins. area, is situated
in the nonh east corner of the country. h is mostly surrounded
by Bangladesh. It is mainly a hilly region with over 60 percent
of its area is under the cover oflorest. Tripura is named alter
a tribe “Tipra” which inhabited the State and to which
the ruling house of Tripura belonged. Tea is the major industry
here and Handloom is the single largest cotton industry.
Agartala is Tripura’ s Capital. There are good many shrines
and temples worth visiting. Some of them are: Lord Jagannath Temple
in old Agartala and at a little distance from town is fine Buddha
Vihar housing beautiful metal idols of Buddha and Bodhisatvas.
60 kms. away, at Radhakishorepur is an ancient temple dedicated
to Goddess Tripura Sundari, perched on a hillock. Agartala is
connected by road with Guwahati, Shillong and Silchar. Dhararnnagar.
200 kms. away. due north, is the nearest railhead. There are daily
buses between Agartala and Dharamnagar. There are a few hotels
and rest houses for visitor’s stay.
