Meghalaya
Literally meaning the ‘Abode of
Clouds’, Meghalaya is one of India’s youngest states.
It is chiefly inhabited by Khasi, Jaintia and Garo Tribes. They
have their distinct culture despite the fact that most of them
have been converted to Christian faith. Meghalaya is rich in
tourist potentials with its colorful tribal life, salubrious
environs, scenic beauty, varied flora and orchards. Shillong,
the captivating hill station at an altitude of 1,496 meters,
is its Capital. The places warranting tourist interest in Shillong
are the State Museum, Botanical Garden and Museum, Crinoline
Waterfalls. Beadon and BishopWaterfalls. The 1,960 meters high
Shillong Peak is the highest place in the district after which
the town takes its name. Fifty eight km. south-east of Shillong
is Cherapunji at an altitude of 1,300 meters above sea level,
is the wettest place on our earth with an average rainfall over
426 inches. Cherapunji, though flat and rather deserted plateau,
is surrounded by hills.
A day’s excursion to Cherapunji from Shillong along the
spectacular road can he a rewarding experience.
Shillong is connected with Guwahati and Calcutta by Vayudoot
service. An all weather motorable road (100 km.) connects Shillong
with Guwahati. It is also linked with other towns by roads.
The accommodation at Shillong includes Tourist Bungalow, Circuit
House and Hotels and a few others.
