Assam
Assam, remote, exotic and
extravaganza of landscape scenery lies in the extreme north-east
corner of India. Lying at the foothills of the Himalaya, Assam
is linked to the rest of India by an isthmus winding its way between
Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal. Assam is a cool land where clouds
float at you feet, hills emerge from its bosom and soar high like
a chorus and panoram changes with unbelievable frequency. It is
here that a visitor feels the pristine freshness of nature. Besides
being a tourist paradise, Assam now has very many industries.
The places worth visiting are the following:
Guwahati
This Capital of Assam is
also the gateway of north east India. Places of tourist interest
in and around Guwahati are the famous Kamakhya Temple, the State
Zoo, Soalkuchi, Chanduhi Lake and Hajo-Pao-Mecca It is well connected
by air, train to Delhi, Calcutta and has good hotels.
Kaziranga National park
This famous sanctuary, bounded
by Brahmaputra River and Miker Hills, sprawls into 430 sq. km.
of sheer thick forests, elephant, grasslands, rugged reeds, mellow
and marshes and shallow pools. Seated on the howdah (seat on the
back) of an elephant you encounter the real wild life of the jungles.
It is 217 km. from Guwahati which is an airport. There are regular
buses from Guwahati. Kaziranga has Tourist Bungalows, forest lodges,
etc., for visitor’s stay.
Jorhat
This beautiful tea-town with
bracing environs is just 90 km. from Kaziranga. The largest river
island Brahmaputra, Majuli is just 20 km. from here. There are
many Vaishnava monasteries.
Like Guwahati, Jorhat is directly linked by air with Calcutta.
Guwahati is a full fledged railway station while for Jorhat the
nearest railhead is Mariani Junction. Both are well-connected
by bus routes as well.
Other important towns of Assam are Dibrugarh, Sibsagar, Silchar
and Tejpur but baring some scenic spots they do not have much
attraction for the tourists.
